Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number issued to citizens of India. Aadhar has collected biometric for the identity proof and demographic data of residents for address proof. Out of 131 crore population (1.31 billions) in year 2017, Aadhar card was issued to 107 crore(1.07 billion) people of india. Unique identification Authority of India, Uidai is a Aadhar delivery institution, Aadhaar system provides single source of online identity verification using biometric across the country for the residents of India. Once residents enrol in Aadhar database, they can use the 12 digit Aadhaar number to authenticate and establish their identity multiple times using electronic means.

History

UIDAI was created with the objective to issue Unique Identification numbers, called UID, named as "Aadhaar", to all residents of India to eliminate duplicate and fake identities, and can be verified and authenticated in an easy and cost-effective way process. Pilot project was run in Maharastra and the first UID number was issued on 29 September 2010 to a resident of Nandurbar, Maharashtra. The Authority has so far issued more than 107 crore Aadhaar numbers to the residents of India.

Direct Benefit transfer

Aadhaar project has been started linked to public subsidy and unemployment benefit schemes like the LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) scheme and MGNREGS(Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme). The LPG Suppliers HP, Indane and Bharat Gas linked Gas Connection with Aadhar numbers to remove duplicates in the year 2013. Currently all the banks are linking to aadhar card and this has been making mandatory. In Direct Benefit transfer scheme, money is directly transferred to the bank account holder which is linked with Aadhar.

Aadhaar Payment system

As per Finance Minister Arun Jaitley annoncement of India Budget speech, An Aadhaar based payment system will be launched soon in the year 2017-18. Aadhar Pay is a merchant version of Aadhaar enabled payment system. Aadhaar Paymenet app enables users to pay without any physical transactions. The Aadhar app is designed to runon the Android platform and has to be installed in their mobile phones by merchants. After registration in the Aadhar app, the merchants mobile phone needs to be linked to a Aadhaar biometric reader. Once the merchant has been registered, the consumers can start money transactions. To use this service, the customer and merchants has to first link her bank account to her Aadhaar.

Portability

Unique identification Authority of India, Uidai is Aadhar delivery institution for the people of Republic India. Aadhaar gives nation-wide portability as it can be used and authenticated anywhere online. This is critical as millions of Indians migrate from one state to another or one village to another village in india.
