Adurru Budda Stupam Constructed during Ashoka Era, Adurru was founded by Sanghamithra in 242 B.C, daughter of King Ashoka, while she was travelling to SriLanka through Odalarevu, the daughter of King Ashoka (274-237B.C.), She was born in Ujjeni and was married to Aggibrahma, who later joined the Order, and had by him a son, Sumana. After over two hundred years of the birth of Buddhism, Buddhism was at its peak during the time of King Dhammasoka in India. She was ordained in her eighteenth year together with Mahinda(brother), her preceptor being Dhammapala and her teacher Ayupala. After her ordination and attainment of arahantship she lived in Pataliputta, and, when Anula and other women of Devanampiyatissa's court at Anuradhapura(srilanka) wished to enter the Order, Devanampiyatissa, at Mahinda's suggestion, sent an embassy, led by Arittha, to Asoka, asking that Sanghamithra might be sent to Ceylon, and with her a branch of the Bodhi tree for Anuradhapura. Asoka granted the request, and sent Sanghamithra, by sea, with eleven other nuns, carrying a branch of the Bodhi tree. On the way, She Founded Adurru and laid a foundation stone of Stupa, after her arrival at Anuradhapura, ordained Anula and her companions. She lived at the Upasika vihara, and had twelve buildings erected there for the use of the nuns. Later, the king built for her the Hatthalhaka vihara.

Adurru is located on the western bank of Godavari river which is around 9.5 km from sea.
Excavations carried out in the year 1925 and 1953 brought to surface a mahastupa which measures 17 feet in diameter. The operation unearthed several stupas, chaityas and viharas. The excavations also revealed shreds of jars, troughs, dishes and bowls of red and kaolin. The excavation site covers an area of 2.04 acres and makes for a worthwhile visit during your Buddhist trip to Andhra Pradesh. Stupa is very close to River Godavari and it was destroyed due to the freqeunt floods of Godavari.
